Description
Teaching Assistant – Specialist SEN School | Lowestoft
Could You Be the Person Who Makes Their Day That Little Bit Easier?
Some Teaching Assistant roles are about helping with worksheets, listening to readers and supporting a busy classroom.
This role is very different.
TeachWell is looking for a resilient and compassionate Teaching Assistant to work within a specialist school in Lowestoft, supporting children and young people with Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD), Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD) and complex needs.
You’ll be working closely with pupils who may need significant support throughout their school day. For some, that could mean helping them communicate a choice. For others, it could mean supporting their physical, sensory or personal care needs, encouraging independence or simply helping them feel safe, settled and ready to learn.
It’s hands-on. It’s demanding. Some days will test your patience and resilience.
But when you build that relationship with a pupil and see the difference your support makes, it can be incredibly rewarding.
The Small Wins Are the Big Wins
Success might be helping a pupil communicate what they want.
Seeing them engage with an activity for the first time.
Helping them become a little more independent.
Building enough trust for them to accept your support.
Or watching them achieve something you’ve been working towards together for weeks.
Those moments are what can make specialist education incredibly rewarding.
What Will You Be Doing?
Working alongside teachers and other professionals, you could be:
- Supporting pupils with complex and individual needs
- Helping pupils communicate using speech, signs, symbols and other communication methods
- Supporting sensory and multi-sensory learning
- Working towards individual EHCP outcomes
- Encouraging independence and essential life skills
- Supporting physical and sensory needs
- Providing appropriate personal care where required
- Helping pupils access learning at a level appropriate to them
We’re Looking for the Right Person
Qualifications and experience matter, but so does understanding the reality of the environment you’re joining.
You’ll need to be resilient, patient, reliable and comfortable working within a demanding specialist setting.
Experience supporting children or young people with SLD, PMLD, complex needs or significant additional needs would be particularly valuable.
Most importantly, you’ll need to recognise that progress may be gradual and that the smallest achievement can represent a huge step forward for an individual pupil.
