A Coventry schoolboy has won funding to study at a top US university after, he says, being influenced by his love of American films and TV programmes.

Joshua Docking, 18, who will take up his place at Colgate University in New York this autumn, is the first in his immediate family to apply to university, said the Sutton Trust.

The organisation’s US programme was established to encourage state school students from low and moderate income homes in the UK to consider studying at American universities.

The Cardinal Newman pupil said he’d been left “gobsmacked” at the news.

Applying to the Sutton Trust programme was one of those ‘why not?’ moments, one of those moments you don’t expect to lead anywhere but it’s fun to feel the drama of it all. Movies like Pitch Perfect showed me the stunning campuses and great student involvement that I wanted
