Teachers and classroom support staff don’t usually need to worry about putting together a CV…until you join a supply teaching agency!
A CV for a single day’s cover isn’t needed as your consultant will already know your strengths, personality and types of school you’ll do well in, and match these accordingly. However, when a school needs cover for a week or longer or even a regular day per week, they will sometimes ask for a CV to reinforce their decision making process. This is when a CV comes into its own!
Writing a CV can be a minefield in terms of what to include: content, style & format, especially when you have been used to filling out standardised application forms in the past.
Please find below some useful tips in creating a CV that hits the mark every time:
To start, include a brief personal statement highlighting your teaching skills and experience and an explanation of where you see your career going. Be honest, if you’re taking time out from a permanent job to recharge your batteries, simply need some flexibility, returning to the classroom after raising your family or income need some extra income just say!
Now move onto your educational achievements, starting with the most recent first, list name of qualification, date completed and where it was completed. Please feel free to list any relevant training courses you have completed in this section.
Next comes your teaching/ta history. This is a summary ofyour previous jobs within education, again starting with the most recent, list your job title, place of work and dates of employment, underneath this bullet point key responsibilities and achievements.
To ensure Safer Recruitment in Education standards are met, we need to account for any gaps in your history (since leaving school) of over 3 months, this is where other work history or gaps in history comes in. Travelling, raising family, work outside of education needs to be listed here.
Finally, other interests and experience section that highlights what an interesting person you are and anything you do outside of work that is relevant to a school.
That’s it in a nutshell! You don’t need to include pretty pictures, coloured backgrounds, text boxes or quotes from obscure philosophers, we’ll do the rest. We hope this helps and should you have any queries please get in touch with your consultant.
